David Solomon - "Artist In A Box"

8 December 2006

On December 8th at the second opening for the "Inside The Box" group exhibition, Santa Fe artist David Solomon performed a 2 hour artwork entitled "Artist Inside A Box".

Encased in a glass-covered crate, Solomon executed more than 15 watercolor paintings which he slipped through the side of the crate for the guests of the gallery.

Solomon describes his artwork this way: "The theme of the show, boxes, gave me the inspiration for this performance piece. It has to do with the notion of being an artist (of whatever type) and dealing with the various pressures and limitations that come with our social environment; politically, commercially and otherwise. Within a contained and confining space which is at the same time totally open to viewing by everyone, an artist is still able to work prolifically. The inherent vulnerability that an artist needs to cultivate can be an expression of generosity, sharing art with the world (whether accepted or not).

It's always possible for an artist to find a way to express his/her vision and make it available to the public in any way that inspiration demands.

Inside or outside a box, it doesn't matter."
